Product testing: AOC LM 727

The pivotable and rotatable pivot stand makes the LM 727 ideal for letters and Internet sites.

The LM 727 offers rich, full colors and a well-rounded picture. Although the color fidelity of 97.1% is only 0.8% less than that of the test winner, it is the second-worst of the field of contestants. The response time of 42.95 seconds also leaves plenty of room for improvement. But the AOC can offer good values for color temperature, which at 6389° K almost achieves the ideal value of 6500° K, and for illumination, which on average is only 7 candela below the ideal value of 180 candela per square meter. The pivot stand and the loudspeakers integrated into the housing score points.

Conclusion: The LM 727 is a well-designed product in every way with a very reasonable price tag. Only players would be forced to accept some compromises with the monitor.

Savings Tip

The LM 727 has a lot to offer you for your money. In addition to the highly stable pivot foot, which even allows a change in the viewing angle, the LM 727 is even equipped with two loudspeakers built into the housing.

The values measured for the LM 727 are fine as well. The illumination is good – there is only a little dimming in the lower left-hand area to 158 candela per square meter. The color temperature is also more than satisfactory. On the average, it is 6389° K and is thus not far away from the ideal value of 6500° K, which corresponds to color warmth of daylight. The viewer can see a lot on the monitor even from the side. At a viewing angle of 30°, the color purity is still a good 90.7% – all of the details can be recognized. The colors make a strong, rich impression. Operation is unusual: the five controls are on the right side of the monitor rather than on the bottom edge, making it easy to reach them with your right hand. The pressure point has been placed well. The onscreen display has a logical structure, allowing you to find the icon you are looking for quickly.

CHIP 07/2004 LM919
Thirty 19-inch TFT monitors from AOC have been proving their mettle for five months now in a CHIP endurance test. Virtually all of the test participants are completely sold on the AOC LM919; they are especially impressed by the display quality.

Participants in the CHIP endurance test praise the AOC monitors: 80% of them give their device a first-class ranking, and the rest of the testers have given the device a rating of no less than “flawless”.

In particular, the endurance testers like the design of the monitor for, with the exception of three testers, no one has any complaints whatsoever. However, one-third of the winners had problems with the installation. The operating instructions, which these testers rated as “rather meagre”, were also of little help in setting up the screen for use. But the features on the monitor reconciled the endurance testers: all of the testers rated the integrated 4-connection USB hub as highly practical, and the participants also regarded the two VGA connections, one analogue and one digital input to allow the monitor to be used with several computers, as extremely useful. The display quality of the LCD panel in the monitor was also described as flawless by almost all of the testers – the monitor is even being used for fast games and videos by some of the CHIP endurance testers. The majority of the participants would not under any circumstances exchange the TFT monitor for the cathode ray monitor they used before, because they say that working with the AOC LM919 is considerably more comfortable and less tiring than with the old monitor. When asked if they would buy this screen, most of the testers answered in the affirmative.

AOC LM729
Maker: AOC International
Web-site: www.aoc-europe.com

The frame of the LCD panel stands out in silver against the black body of this monitor, and the control knobs are mounted on the right-hand side. This model is fitted with a built-in loudspeaker system that is concealed by a decorative insert made of black cloth located in the lower section of the body.

The AOC LM729 is one of the few to be fitted with a really convenient stand. Its display can be turned sideways and vertically, its height can be adjusted, and in addition the screen can be rotated to a portrait position, the solidity of the stand giving the whole structure a good stability. Interestingly, in the rear section of the body there is a special cut-out which makes a convenient handle for carrying the apparatus; if necessary it can be taken in one hand, like an ordinary bag.

The viewing angles of this monitor are not very big, but it has very good colour representation: there is great richness and minimal deviation in the colour range. An added attraction for this model is its low price; it is incidentally the only inexpensive apparatus with a portrait facility.

Personal Computer World BG 06/2004 LM729
Price: USD 472 without VAT

Advantages: good colours, perfect synchronisation, possibility to adjust screen position in all directions
Disadvantages: 25 msec for pixels to react

Recommended by Personal Computer World BG
Contacts: www.reset.bg

Although the screen of the AOC is one of the components with a rather poor reaction time for the pixels (25 msec), this was the first one of the screens tested for which we did not have to touch the settings at all in order to achieve realistic colours – photographs looked nearly perfect on screen.

Its synchronisation is virtually impeccable – no flickering whatsoever is noticed, and on switching to the automatic setting this does not change at all, nor does the position of the image. Lighting of the screen is even.

One essential advantage of the LM729 is the option to position the height of the screen, to turn it around its vertical axis, and also to turn the screen only around by 90 degrees (by changing landscape to portrait).

Controls of the screen menus are easy to handle and you have got preliminary settings.

The viewing angles, as indicated in the specifications, are not entirely real again but up to about 40 degrees it is difficult to notice any change in image. AOC have not unnecessarily ‘kicked out’ and have not indicated as absurd any angles of the 150 degrees type and more.

VIAGRA FOR THE IMAGE

Travelling in a large, expensive car isn't always more convenient than in a small one; you don't get the same manoeuvrability, and it uses more fuel. But from the point of view of comfort, prestige and flair?Andrey Sasinovsky found out for himself.

To look tough, you don't always have to go to a workout centre. All you have to do is to put a 19? LCD monitor, this one for instance, on your desk. Competitors and colleagues will immediately get a bit gloomy. The model gets its strength from a good quality stand with three forms of adjustment: height, pivot and 90?swivel. The design isn't exceptionally fanciful, but the monitor looks expensive and prestigious, especially because of the side-mounted control knobs and the dark woven netting over the lower edge of the screen. Lovely.

Switch it on. Loading Windows immediately demonstrates the evenness of the lighting (both on a dark and a light background) and the width of the viewing angle, and when you move to the side the picture gradually gets darker (but not straight away), but without adding colours as often happens (for example a light background becoming yellow). The pixellation slightly spoils the impression. From a normal distance it is noticeable that the sky-blue Windows work desk is not homogenous, but is made up of a multitude of small crystals. But this pixel size is dictated by the considerable diagonal of the screen and its resolution. An increase in the latter would have cost a very different sum of money. The colours are bright and rich. The text reads as if it was on the page of an expensive glossy magazine. It's the same for screen brightness: everything is visible and your eyes don't go blind or get tired. As for the presentation of dynamic images (films or games), the high reaction time makes itself known: the image slows slightly. Of course you can watch a video or play a game, but it doesn't give the same pleasure as on a beam-type or plasma screen.

Matrix
The 19? display arouses the imagination, and the screen's excellent characteristics for reproducing images certainly won't let it go to sleep again. The viewing angles are impressive.
Controls
All knobs are at the side. Therefore don't try to push on the symbols engraved at the side of the screen, in the naïve belief that they react to touch
Stand
If it became a hotel, it would be five-star: it's top-quality service. The display can be tilted, raised or lowered and (which is very useful if you're working with diagrams and texts) pivot vertically.
Sound
Small loudspeakers are concealed behind the woven drapery. The maker promises 3W output from each one, but there obviously isn't enough drive and low frequency sound.
